Open RAN offers a choice of vendors and flexibility to operators. It requires a system integrator to take an end-to-end role in building and deploying the RAN platform, therefore an open ecosystem enables multiple technology vendors to operate on a common cloud native platform providers. This requires a use of common tools and processes to on-board CNFs and to automate their operation and deployment. Edge computing allows operators to deploy new types of service, using the same common cloud native platform. Enterprise services like smart agriculture and video analytics and telecom services that manage cost and performance like CDN, video transcoding require operators to develop an ecosystem of application partners.

5G should not be just a technology. It should look at the application and services on top of the network and identify where protecting controls could be added to allow customers more control of their data, therefore, when and how they use it. 5G could provide social networks with 360 degree tracking of individuals – who would benefit from that and where does ethics stand in all of this?
